Rub a lime wedge around the rim of a glass, then dip in sugar. Add ice. In a cocktail shaker filled with ice, combine 1 tablespoon fresh lime juice, 1 ounce light rum, 3 tablespoons simple syrup and 1/4 cup pomegranate juice. Shake, then strain into glass, leaving a little room at top. Float 1 ounce of dark rum on top. Garnish with a licorice spider (how to pics are below) tied to a stirrer (optional, of course). Boo!

On Tuesday, food ed Heather Meldrom and I were lucky enough to attend an Italian wine tasting event at Eataly, the new Italian-foods super-store that Mario Batali and his partner, Joe Bastianich, recently opened in NYC. Plenty has been written about the place, and by all accounts the crowds are insane (sometimes there’s a line to get IN), so I held off on going. The place is incredible—50,000 square feet of Italian specialty foods, an espresso bar, several restaurants, a wine store and beer depot, cookware (including plenty of Mario’s orange clogs for sale), fresh fish, a meat counter, a sandwich and panini bar, a fabulous bakery, and a staggering array of beverages and condiments you’ve never seen before. There’s no indication that the crowds are thinning, either, so head over with an open schedule and calm demeanor (we had no trouble scoring a table at the pasta and pizza restaurant at 5:30pm). Here’s a little slide show that I hope captures some of what you can see and taste there.

Did you watch the Martha Stewart Show this morning? If not, be sure to catch it at 2pm! We have been smitten with The Geometry of Pasta (below), a brilliant and beautiful cookbook about pasta and sauces by Caz Hildebrand and chef Jacob Kenedy (above, in the kitchen of his London restaurant, Bocca di Lupo). Today, Jacob is on the Martha Show making Baked Manicotti and Triofe Al Pesto Genovese (torpedo shaped pasta with pesto) from the book. We got the chance to sit down with Caz and Jacob before the show, stay tuned for Q&A!
