11 Common Types of Magnesium Explained »

Magnesium is one of the most abundant minerals in the human body. You may not know it, but 50% of magnesium is located in the bones. Magnesium, similar to zinc, is a necessary cofactor for over 300 of the body’s biochemical reactions.

vitamins 02 11 Common Types of Magnesium Explained

This means that many of the body’s everyday processes, such as creating muscle, maintaining nerve function, keeping a healthy heartbeat and sustaining an optimal immune system, are dependent upon this mineral. Many scientific studies are looking into the role of magnesium in the prevention of many commonly occurring chronic ailments such as heart disease, hypertension and diabetes.

For this reason, it is important to know the best forms of magnesium to use when taking supplements. The following article will help you understand the different types of magnesium currently on the market today. It will also give an overview of magnesium orotate, the most optimal form of the mineral supplement.

Magnesium is not easily absorbed in the body unless first attached to another substance. For this reason, many supplement manufacturers have “chelated” magnesium to organic and amino acids. A few of these include magnesium oxide, magnesium sulfate and magnesium carbonate. Depending on both the amount of magnesium in the supplement, as well as the bioavailability, the quality of the supplement can be determined.

Bioavailability refers to the amount of magnesium in the supplement that can be assimilated by the digestive system and ultimately used for cellular activity and health benefit. However even if magnesium is bioavailable this does not mean that it will pass through the cell membrane and enter the cell nucleus.

11 Types of Magnesium

Magnesium Amino Acid Chelate

A mineral chelate form of magnesium containing an ion of magnesium oxide connected to a mixture of some other form of amino acid. This could be a lactate, a glycine, aspartate or arginate, etc. The best chelated amino acid form of magnesium is aspartate or arginate.

Magnesium Oxide

This type of magnesium shows high levels of concentration, but poorer levels of bioavailability (only 4%). Also referred to as “Magnesia”, magnesium oxide is commonly used medicinally as a laxative and relief for acid reflux.

Magnesium Citrate

Derived from the magnesium salt of citric acid, this form of magnesium has lower concentration, but a high level of bioavalibity (90%). Magnesium citrate is commonly used as to induce a bowel movement, but has also been studied for it’s ability to help prevent kidney stones.

Magnesium Orotate

The most effective form of magnesium supplement, created through the use of the mineral salts of orotic acid. Both plants and animals use orotates to create DNA and RNA. Extensive scientific research done by by Hans A. Nieper, M.D. has found that orotates can penetrate cell membranes, enabling the effective delivery of the magnesium ion to the inner-most layers of the cellular mitochondria and nucleus. Magnesium orotate contains many properties that can help protect you and your health, while offering your cells the most readily-absorbable form of magnesium on the market today.

Magnesium Chloride

A form of magnesium showing moderate concentrations, but higher levels of bioavalibity when compared to magnesium oxide. Magnesium chloride has many uses, most commonly to help manufacture paper, some types of cements and fireproofing agents.

Magnesium Lactate

This type of magnesium shows moderate concentrations, but higher levels of bioavalibity as compared to magnesium oxide. Magnesium lactate is a mineral supplement that is most commonly used for treating digestive issues. Do not take magnesium lactate if you have kidney disease, or other kidney-related problems.

Magnesium Sulfate

An inorganic form of magnesium with an elemental concentration of 10% and lower levels of bioavailability. Magnesium sulfate contains not only magnesium, but also sulfer and oxygen, and is commonly referred to as Epsom Salt.

Magnesium Carbonate

This form of magnesium has moderate levels of elemental concentration and 30% bioavalibity rates. Magnesium carbonate has a strong laxative-effect when taken in high dosages. It is also commonly known as chalk, and is used as a drying agent by pitchers, gymnasts, rock climbers and weight lifters.

Magnesium Glycinate, Malate & Taurates

Chelated forms of magnesium holding moderate to low concentrations and higher levels of bioavailability. All three types of magnesium have a variety of uses, but none are as beneficial as the previous magnesium supplements listed above.

If you take need a magnesium supplement I recommend taking it with Calcium. For this reason, I developed a calcium supplement called IntraCal that provides the best ratio of calcium and magnesium orotate.

Raw Food World – Special Report! »

If you’re a regular reader of this blog or follow my twitter account, you probably know that I’m a big believer of eating healthy and following a raw food diet.

antioxidants Raw Food World – Special Report!

On a daily basis, I personally eat as many raw seeds, nuts, fruits and veggies as I can, all uncooked and unprocessed. I eat about 95% raw but still have organic veggie soup or some cooked veggies or beans from time to time. I have also experimented with a raw fruitarian diet where I only ate fruit for a couple of months. I must say, that was pretty hard.

When food is “prepared” below 116°F, it is considered “raw,” because once your food hits this temperature range, it starts to lose its essential nutrients and enzymes that your body needs. Raw foods are considered “live” food which means extra energy and a healthier life for you.

Over the last few years, I’ve read many websites and articles about raw foods and the benefits/dangers associated with this diet. Over this time, I have also discovered many great resources to help you with this lifestyle change. In my opinion, there is no better resource for raw foods and following a “raw lifestyle” than RawFoodWorld.com.

I can’t tell you how much time I have spent surfing around on this site. Not only are Matt and Angela Monarch the leaders in following a raw food lifestyle, but they also provide you with exercise equipment, books and videos, herbal supplements and many other accessories you need to live a happy and healthy life.

Raw Foods Radio & TV Show

raw radioshow Raw Food World – Special Report!

One of my favorite aspects of RawFoodWorld.com is their radio and TV shows. They bring you the latest info and interviews with their favorite raw food advocates. If you miss the live interviews, you can always download the mp3 and listen to it at your leisure, which is what I do most of the time.

Raw Foods & Weight Loss

Another interesting aspect of RawFoodWorld.com is the story of Angela Stokes. She’s a co-owner of the site, as well as regular blogger/owner of RawReform.com. Since 2001, she has lost over 160lbs because of her raw lifestyle. You can read more about her incredible weightloss journey on her site, as well as order some of her e-books

I would highly recommend implementing more raw foods into your daily diet. It doesn’t have to be an immediate change. In fact, it’s probably best to slowly eat more and more raw foods. For more help on following a raw lifestyle, you should definitely go check out everything that RawFoodWorld.com can offer you.

Why You Shouldn’t Always Trust An Experts* Opinion »

wrong book Why You Shouldn’t Always Trust An Experts* Opinion

The accuracy of expert advice is something nearly all of us take for granted. This applies to recommendations on everything from medicine to preparing our taxes. Most of us automatically assume that the people giving this advice always know what they’re talking about. Fortunately for the rest of us though, David Freedman isn’t most like most people.

In his new book, ‘Wrong: Why Experts* Keep Failing Us…‘, Freedman discusses the shortcomings of expert advice, ironically, only the way that an expert can.

It’s scary to think that nearly 70% of studies presented in the world’s top medical journals are debunked within a few years of being published, or that up to 90% of what your family doctor learned in medical school is now known to be incorrect.

These are things that we all take for granted. So much so, Freedman points out, imaging scans show that we literally stop using our brains to think as strongly for ourselves when faced with the gospel of expert advice.

Part of what makes it so difficult to critically processes the advice of many so-called experts is their tendency to project themselves as infallible, larger than life pseudo-celebrities. This confidence is a big part of what makes them so charismatic and easy to trust. Unfortunately, charm isn’t exactly a good indication of competency or trustworthiness.

In a recent interview with TIME magazine, Freedman also comments on the tendency of experts to ignore information that contradicts their desired result. He claims that this isn’t just a frequent occurrence, but rather an unspoken sort of norm.

As Freedman puts it:

“Scientists and other experts are human beings, they want to advance their careers, they have families to support, and what do you know, they tend to get the answers they chase.” [1]
[ Click Here to Read an Excerpt of 'Wrong' — NY Times ]

He also makes a point to comment on the lack of community wide checks and balances to ensure that data isn’t manipulated before it’s made available to others. It’s a scary thing to think about considering how much stock both the general public and the greater scientific community put into this information.

What Can You Do to Avoid Bad Expert Advice?

When it comes to listening to the experts, in many ways our hands are tied. After all, we can’t all know everything about everything, now can we? The most important thing we can do to protect ourselves from bad advice is to think carefully about how accurate the information we’re given seems. If in doubt, search out additional information, and of course look into the credentials of the experts that you decide are worth listening to.

I wanted to publish this just to let people know to take responsibility for researching things in their lives before just believing what they are told. For example: If people took the time to research the negative effects of GMO foods, microwaves, vaccines, baby formulas, harmful foods, chemicals and other damaging toxins before consuming and using them, we would live in a much healthier and cleaner world.

The Health Dangers of Table Salt »

table salt The Health Dangers of Table Salt

Salt is a wonderful thing. Whether from the far reaches of the Himalayan rock mountains, to the depths of the oceans floor, salt is a beautiful and necessary mineral. It’s an important element in keeping the proper mineral balance in practically all of the earth’s living creatures.

In fact, every cell in our body needs salt. Our bodies rely on salt to keep good bone density, proper circulation and stabilized blood sugar levels. But how could something so wonderful and natural become a poison? Here are a few common misconceptions and dangers of salt.

Salt vs. Naturally Occurring Sodium

Table Salt” is a manufactured form of sodium called sodium chloride. While similar to naturally occurring rock, crystal, or sea salt, table salt merely mimics the taste of these elements.

Table salt is created by taking natural salt (or crude oil flake leftovers) and cooking it at 1200° Fahrenheit. Once the unprocessed salt is heated up to this temperature, it starts to lose the majority of the eighty important elemants that naturally occurr. Other naturally occurring forms of sodium, including sea salts and himalayan salts, are harvested and dried in the sun.

They are actually alkaline minerals that help keep us hydrated, balance our sodium-potassium ratios, as well as fill the body with powerful electrolytes. They also contain all of the trace elements needed for proper immune, thyroid and adrenal function (that are completely stripped out of table salt). Real forms of salt also boost the creation of digestive enzymes and juices that allow us to extract and assimilate other vitamins and nutrients from the food we eat.

What Is In Table Salt?

source

Commonly purchased iodized salts, available at super markets or sitting on the table of your favorite restaurant, have synthetic chemicals added to them. These chemicals include everything from manufactured forms of sodium solo-co-aluminate, iodide, sodium bicarbonate, fluoride, anti-caking agents, toxic amounts of potassium iodide and aluminium derivatives. It may come as a shock, but most table salt is not only unhealthy, but can sometimes be toxic.

The natural forms of important iodine is lost when we manufacture salt. Without this natural iodine, the thyroid is severely harmed, leading to growth and metabolism issues. Because of this, the chemical-based salt industry began to add synthetic forms of iodine to their products.

Other salts add things such as processed white sugar and toxic MSG (mono-sodium-glutamate). And what about the color of table salt? Salt found in the natural world is not usually white. Table salt has been colored white with bleach. And where does this salt come from? Much of it is the actual flaky residue from oil digging. That is correct. Crude oil extract is one way we produce table salt.

The Health Dangers of Salt

Table salt causes the blood pressure to rise rapidly because the blood is attempting to move the toxic elements rapidly away from the heart. This is why doctors will often tell people with high blood pressure to stop intake of salt. Moreover, excessive table salt causes us to retain waters and other fluids. Many chronic imbalances such as diabetes, gout and obesity can be worsened or even partially caused by excessive intake of common table salt. And be aware, this salt is not just the stuff in your shaker.

Most packaged and processed foods contain astronomical amounts of the stuff. These preservatives can cause swelling and, over time, major kidney, thyroid and liver problems, as well as the development of goiters, asedema, hypertension, heart disease, strained elimination systems, muscle cramps, water retention, edema, stroke, heart failure, PMS, and even major nervous system disorders such as anxiety and depression.[1]

Table salt is particularly hard on both the circulatory system and nervous system. It also wreaks havoc on the delicate balance of the lymph system in the body. This salt is also highly addictive, as the more the body becomes used to the high levels of fake sodium, the more it craves it.

Remember, everything in moderation. Salt has many health benefits, but you when used excessively, it can also have many dangers. I personally stopped using traditional table salt, and switched to himalayan salt years back. It’s all my family uses.

New Research: Soy Formula Affects Reproductive Development in Mice »

You might already know that I’m not a big fan of certain non-fermented soy products. The results of a newly published study on the effects of soy formula on the reproductive systems of mice only underscores how bad they can be for the body.

mice New Research: Soy Formula Affects Reproductive Development in Mice
source

In this particular study, newborn mice were fed soy formula mixed with a plant derived isoflavone called genistein. Isoflavones occur naturally in a number of legumes, including soy beans. And while many types of isoflavones are rich in antioxidants and other healthful compounds, genistein specifically, has been connected to a wide range of serious health concerns such as cancer and, as this article points out, reproductive abnormalities.

Researchers fed the mice a concentration of 50 milligrams per kilogram of genistein enriched formula via pipette in combination with nursing directly from their mother. The control group was fed unenriched formula that contained only trace amounts of genistein and nursed as well. Regular blood samples were taken from both groups to ensure that genistein concentrations were minimal in the control group and comparable to those found in human infants in the experimental group.

What Are the Negative Effects of Soy Formula Consumption?

The effects of exposure were measured at five days, and again at four months to simulate late infancy and early adulthood in humans. The control group was observed to already have a number of reproductive abnormalities by the first test. Later, the frequency of reproductive cycles in adult females was measured along with pregnancy rate, birth weight and litter size, as well as the overall sex ratio of their offspring.

By day five, the impact of genistein exposure on the thymus glands of mice in the experimental group was determined to have resulted in a 28 percent reduction in average weight. Average uterine weight showed an increase of 41 percent with a significant reduction in progesterone receptors in the uterine lining. These effects were ultimately found to extend the time between windows of fertility in the adult mice, resulting in a lower number to total offspring produced.

Mice are one of nature’s most proficient breeders, and while this study is only a small step toward better understanding the long term effects of soy consumption in humans, the noticeable lowering of their reproduction rate makes a strong and unsettling point.

What’s the Better Option?

baby New Research: Soy Formula Affects Reproductive Development in Mice

There are a number of reasons why parents choose to use a soy-based formula over more traditional kinds. The most common of these are an inability to nurse and lactose sensitivity. Still, there are healthier options than resorting to soy formulas that may do long-term damage to your child’s body.

Nursing either directly or with the aid of a pump is by far the healthiest option. If, for whatever reason, this is not possible, consider using organic raw goats milk.

Researchers Discover Successful Probiotic Treatment for Inflammatory Bowel Disease »

ibd Researchers Discover Successful Probiotic Treatment for Inflammatory Bowel Disease

New research published in the Journal of Medical Microbiology shows that certain strains of probiotic bacteria may be the most effective way to alleviate the symptoms of Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD). In light of these findings, many experts are optimistic that safe, more effective treatment options for IBD are soon to follow.

What Is IBD & Why Is It So Difficult to Treat?

Inflammatory Bowel Disease is a very serious medical condition, and should not be confused with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). While both are generalized terms which relate to abnormal bowel conditions, one is significantly more serious than the other. While the symptoms of IBS are unpleasant, and can often lead to a dramatic decrease in quality of life, they are not usually fatal.

IBD, on the other hand, is usually associated with digestive conditions like Crohns disease and ulcerative colitis. It often includes more severe symptoms such as frequent bloody diarrhea, which can become life-threatening to some individuals if left untreated.

Roughly 10 out of every 50,000 individuals in North America and Europe are affected by Inflammatory Bowel Disease. The exact cause of IBS and IBD remains uncertain; however, research points toward an overactive response by the body’s immune system to specific strains of bacteria naturally found in the human digestive tract. In many cases, these are what are referred to as “beneficial” bacteria, because they assist the body’s natural digestive processes.

Normally these bacteria are ignored by the immune system. Unfortunately in people with IBS or IBD, this is not the case. Instead their bodies treat this bacteria with utmost hostility, and destroy the sensitive digestive tissue they are attached to in an overzealous effort to remove them.

Despite having known about the connection between intestinal bacteria and IBD for some time now, scientists have had difficulty isolating the particular strains of microorganisms which trigger the extreme response. As a result, generalized probiotic treatments have been used for years to alleviate the symptoms of IBD in many patients with only limited success.

Important New Information About Treating IBD

Newly utilized strains of probiotic bacteria such as Faecalibacterium prausnitzii and Butyricicoccus pullicaecorum, which naturally produce large quantities of butyric acid, may hold the key to improved treatment options. Researchers speculate that these strains may also produce additional anti-inflammatory compounds that may help with IBD. By focusing their efforts on these particular probiotic strains in treating IBD patients, they have documented significant improvement over more commonly used probiotic bacterium.

Preparing Your Body For Probiotics

latero flora 05 Researchers Discover Successful Probiotic Treatment for Inflammatory Bowel Disease

Gently cleansing the digestive tract with a safe, all-natural supplement such as Oxy-Powder prior to beginning a probiotic regimen is a great way to ensure you get the most from your treatment plan. Not only does this help to create an environment in which probiotic bacteria are able to thrive, it also helps rid the body of harmful bacteria which may compete with the newly introduced probiotics.

Regular colon cleansing is a great way to help maintain your digestive health. But not all cleansing techniques are created equal. In fact, some can do more harm than good. So be sure to do the proper research and know what exactly is in each colon cleansing product.

I have had great success over the years using the probiotic Latero-Flora and highly recommend anyone suffering from IBS or IBD disorders to take it on a regular basis.

How to Get Rid of a Beer Belly »

beer belly How to Get Rid of a Beer Belly
source

Many of my readers and clients often ask me about how they can lose weight around their mid-section, a problematic area that doesn’t seem to go away, no matter how many miles they run or sit-ups they do at the gym.

Oftentimes, this extra weight comes from what we all know as “the beer belly.” That unsightly pudge that comes from too drinking too much alcohol, eating a variety of unhealthy/fatty foods, such as processed white flour, sugar and foods low in fiber.

Many of you may be unaware that the average can of beer contains 140 calories, and the averaged mixed-drink has over 600 calories. These are also what are known as “empty-calories” meaning that your body will have to work pretty hard to process them, without getting anything back in the way of vital nutrients, vitamins and minerals. Typically, this leads to weight gain.

What is more, alcohol has been shown to actual interfere with your body’s ability to metabolize fats, meaning that your body actual stores fat much easier. And from this combined effect comes the quintessential beer belly.

The following article will address the beer belly and the active steps you can take to deflate it.

The Obvious One: Stop Drinking Alcohol

beer How to Get Rid of a Beer Belly

The best step you can take for your health, as well as the best way to get rid of your beer belly, is to stop taking in what is causing the extra pudge. If you truly enjoy a cold beer, just be sure to drink in moderation.

Try cutting back to one or two alcoholic drinks per week. Reducing the amount of alcohol you take in can lead to a huge reduction in your total weekly calorie intake. In fact, if you just stop drinking alcohol, as well as sodas, you quickly notice a drop in weight.

Take Action Against Alcohol: Exercise!

The more we move our body’s, the more we enhance our lives. Burning fat and keeping our cardiovascular system in optimal shape, will help us rid our body of excess fat and toxins. By doing cardiovascular exercise, for at least 20 minutes, 3 times per week, you will increase your heart rate, add strength to your body, and help tone your muscles.

What is more, you should not only focus on sit-ups and “belly-related” exercises, thinking that this will tone your gut. The excess fat around your belly is the issue, and until you lose that fat, the weight will cover any of the muscles you are building. So, concentrate first on burning fat through cardio workouts.

Eat Like You Love Your Body

One of the saddest consequences of over-consumption of alcohol is that it causes our body’s to crave foods that are harmful. The classic example of fried foods and snacks always accompany drinks for a reason. Our body begins to crave salt and sugar to buffer all the liquid and alcohol we are taking in.

Healthy foods such as fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, raw seeds and raw nuts, as well as lots of water, will help aid the body in detoxifying itself from the harmful residues left behind by the over-consumption of alcohol. It will also boost energy levels, increasing overall well-being, and over time, help to reduce or eliminate alcohol cravings. Another tip is to not eat after 8pm and get a good nights rest.

Drink Lots of Purified Water

Drinking enough water will help to make the process of eliminating extra fat from the body easier. Try to drink half your body weight in ounces per day (body-weight in lbs/2). I recommend using distilled water, or if that is not available, use another form of purified water.
