Typically I write my daily weight loss exercise column on a variety of ways in which you can use exercise to boost your metabolism, lose weight, feel great, and get in shape.

However, after just returning home from a lap swim workout at the local YMCA I couldn’t help but share my experience with you. As I was sipping my water in the lobby area outside of the main gym I was staring blankly at the vending machine. As my eyes came into focus I realized there was the usual assortment of unhealthy snacks like Doritos, potato chips, Twix bars, etc. By now I’ve become desensitized to this type of marketing to kids and adults, but today was different.

Some “association of vending machines” is actually putting gold “check marks” on products they believe are “healthy” choices. You’re never going to guess what they dubbed healthy…

Caramel creams, Snackwell vanilla cookies, and pretzels!

So let’s see… they basically just told children (and their parents) that refined sugar, dyes, preservatives, and bleached flour are now health choices. Really?

I understand these 3 choices may be lower on the calorie side, but I don’t think that qualifies them as a “healthy choice.”

It takes a lot to get me going, but this was outrageous. Who is this association of vending machines to give out health advice that is clearly misguided at best and outright poisonous to children at worst?

I write this article today for your help in putting an end to this form of child abuse, miseducation, and greed from vending machine manufacturers like this one. If you have a suggestion of how we can stop this crime against kids please leave me a comment because I’m not quite sure how we can end these lies. We can’t let unhealthy foods be painted as good eating choices – especially at a young age when children are forming their decisions about how they will eat as adults.
