Mindful eating has finally made it to the big time. In the movie Eat, Pray, Love, Julia Roberts digs into pizza and gelato with zest, not worrying about what her food choices will do to her weight. She knows that right now, she needs to thoroughly enjoy what she’s eating. Even though she’s gaining weight, she’ll deal with that later. Now’s not the time.
Oh, were it so with many people who struggle with eating and weight. They might have a much easier time. Let me explain.
As I said in a column published in USA Today last week, food is one of the greatest pleasures of life. Yet so many of us
struggle with guilt about eating what we like. And that actually creates many of the
problems we have with achieving and maintaining a healthy weight.
