Summertime is here and that may mean you are going to take a vacation, but with all the fun in the sun,
you will still have to manage your diabetes. Here are some tips to help you when traveling so you can enjoy your trip and keep your blood glucose levels in control:
Have regular meals time – Try to stick to similar meal times that you are used to when not traveling.
Eat a consistent amount of food – just because it is vacation does not mean you have to overdo-it with the amount of food you eat. Like with your meal times, try to stay consistent.
Do your research – Find out the foods that are available where you are traveling, where there are supermarkets, and look up restaurants in the area and see what they serve so you know what your options are when traveling.
Carry everything you need to manage your diabetes with you – This should include your medications, blood glucose meter and supplies, and plenty of snacks and water. NEVER check your diabetes supplies in your luggage on an airplane or keep it in the trunk of the car when you are traveling.
The American Diabetes Association has more tips to help you for when you are traveling along with this fact sheet that lets you know what you can take with you passed security when traveling by airplane.
