Restaurant Eating Tips

Dining out can be fun, but you should go to the restaurant prepared to make wise food choices to assist in
managing your diabetes. Here are some tips for dining out:
- Call the restaurant before hand and find out how different foods are prepared. You can also see if they will fax you a copy of the menu or look online as many restaurants have their menus on their websites.
- Avoid foods that are friend, seasoned with fat, or have added sauces.
- Ask that foods are prepared without extra oil or butter.
- Order a low-fat appetizer for your main meal to assist in portion control.
- Enjoy a salad with dressing on the side or a low-fat broth based soup as an appetizer to help you feel fuller sooner.
- Share an entree with a friend or ask for a half serving so you are not tempted to eat too much.
- Request that gravies, sauces, dressings, mayonnaise, etc. are served on the side.
- Ask that the breadbasket be removed from the table so you are not
tempted to over eat. - Carry a copy of your food plan or a carbohydrate guide book to assist you in making good food choices
If you have difficulty keeping track of serving sizes while eating out here are some tips:
- 1 teaspoon = size of the tip of your thumb
- 1 tablespoon = size of your whole thumb
- 2 tablespoons = golf ball
- 1/2 cup = tight fist or a tennis ball
- 1 cup = fist or a baseball
- 3 ounces meat = palm of an average woman's hand or a deck of cards
- medium sized fruit = tennis ball
