The Magic of Beans

Beans are a magical fruit, and not for the reason spelled out in the familiar rhyme. The real reasons are so powerful, however, it’s worthwhile continuing the association with magic, even if the rhyme makes a few of us hesitate before partaking in these tasty and highly nutritious foodstuffs.
Many of us probably enjoy beans throughout the year. But right now, as the season continues its march in North America to cooler days, our tastes incline towards heartier foods. Beans are the perfect food to satisfy that desire, providing a balance of filling carbohydrates, healthy plant protein, fiber and minerals that help keep our bodies healthy and at healthy weights. As far as healthy weights go, their soluble fiber content in particular helps manage blood sugar swings, important for those of us with diabetes or insulin resistance.
