To Tan or not To Tan?
Yes it is finally here and the Sun has got his hat on. How long for we don’t know but when the sun arrives it can only mean one thing we all want to set off on our summer holidays, we bare more skin and we sit on bikini clad beaches hoping our tan will mature to the gorgeous gold brown we watch walking across the sand. Our desire to remove all traces of milk bottle white means we are willing to expose our skin to the harmful sun’s rays, sitting in various conjointed positions so that even our armpits bake to a golden brown but is this the right thing to do? Well unfortunately, not. The fact is we should keep covered up, wear a high factor sun block and sit in the shade. Sun safety is paramount to healthy skin and to prevent premature ageing.
So how do we get a gorgeous bronze body, well the answer lies in self tan. I know what your thinking, self tan is messy and sometimes the smell is not dissimilar to a pickled orange but it’s safe, it produces a tan all year round, the tan produced is even and controlled and there’s no sand to remove from parts that can’t be mentioned. Plus self tanning lotions and sprays have improved 100% over the last few years. So here at FashionBeans we have picked through some of the latest self tanning products available and produced 4 of our favourites.
Prepare Your Skin
But before we get to the self tanning part you must prepare the skin. To do this wax or shave a few days before and exfoliate the skin the day before. Exfoliating removes the dead skin cells and ensures an even and smooth self tan finish. There are zillions of exfoliating scrubs available but two of our favourites are Karin Herzog Shower Body scrub and the Body Shop Shea Body Scrub:

Karin Herzog shower scrub is great for simplicity with a hint of decadence. This scrub contains white marble and vitamins which leave the skin polished and refined perfectly prepared for self tanning. The Body Shop’s Shea Scrub is a no nonsense body scrub that softens and moisturises the skin at the same time. The scrub has an oil-base with loads of exfoliating salt grains and organic sugar. The addition of Community Trade shea butter leaves the skin soft and supple.
Recommended Products
Here are Women’s FashionBeans favourite Self tans:
- My personal favourite is Clarins Delicious Self Tanning Cream, it is truly delicious. This cream is fool proof because of the caramel tint allowing you to see where it has been applied. Not only that the cream has an iridescence which makes the skin glow. The cream is quick drying and produces a deep long lasting colour.
- Decleor Express Hydrating Self Tan Spray is ultra light and easy to apply. The non oily texture colours the skin in 1 to 2 hours which means this self tan is perfect for a fast result with little effort.
- ModelCo introduces its new revolutionary tanning innovation, the Self-Tanning Glove. Once again an effective product for less effort. The unique custom-designed glove contains the exact amount of tanning formula for a one body application. The formulation is quick drying with no streaks and produces a gorgeous golden glow. Again for best results exfoliate the day before.
- Nivea Sun Kissed Skin can be used daily as part of your skin care routine. Using a daily moisturiser that contains self tan means the tan builds gradually and is often more even. My logic to this is the bit you missed the day before will be covered the next day. Other benefits include using a two in one product which is more cost effective and because it’s part of your routine it seems less of an effort. One set back, you do need to allow the lotion to dry on the skin before putting your clothes on. Not good if your impatient like me.
